UNIONS BY THE NUMBERS
The Alabama Department of Labor has filings on record for over 300 unions in Alabama having
a membership of 25 or more.
The largest labor union in Alabama, the United Steelworkers of America, had 17,468
members in 2008 followed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
(IBEW), 10,645 and the International Association of Machinists, 10,087.
Total union membership in the state now numbers 181,000, about 10.9% of the workforce
(BLS Survey, 2009).
A completed Annual Report by Labor Organizations or Labor Unions must be filed with the Commissioner of the Department of Labor on or before March 31, or if the organization's fiscal year does not coincide with the calendar year, within 90 days after the close of the fiscal year, and by that time copies must be made available to every member of the labor organization or labor union reporting.
